Ronald Ross had a habit of calling the different types of mosquitoes he was dissecting ‘the grey ones’ or ‘the brindled ones’ instead of using their ‘official’ scientific names. When he found the Anopheles mosquito that was guilty of the malaria transmission, he described it as being ‘dapple winged’.
